What Is an MT4 Expert Advisor?
An MT4 Expert Advisor (EA) is an automated trading script — often called a forex robot or trading bot — that runs directly inside MetaTrader 4. It executes buy and sell orders based on a predefined strategy, removing emotion from the equation and operating 24/5 without manual input.
Whether you're running a buy sell EA, a bb EA (Bollinger Band-based system), or an mt4 ai-powered algorithm, the installation process is the same. This guide walks you through every step.
Step 1: Download Your Expert Advisor File
Your EA will arrive as a .ex4 or .mq4 file. After purchase from our MT4 Expert Advisors collection, you'll receive the file via email or instant download.
Step 2: Locate the MT4 Data Folder
Open MetaTrader 4, then go to File → Open Data Folder. Navigate to:
MQL4 → Experts
Paste your .ex4 or .mq4 file into this folder.
Step 3: Restart MetaTrader 4
Close and reopen MT4. Your EA will now appear in the Navigator panel under Expert Advisors.
Step 4: Attach the EA to a Chart
- Open the chart for your target pair (e.g. XAUUSD, EURUSD)
- Drag the EA from the Navigator onto the chart
- In the settings window, go to the Common tab and enable Allow Automated Trading
- Configure your lot size, stop loss, and take profit in the Inputs tab
- Click OK
Step 5: Enable AutoTrading
Click the AutoTrading button in the MT4 toolbar (it should turn green). You'll see a smiley face icon on the top-right of your chart confirming the EA is active.
Configuring Key Inputs

- Lot Size — fixed or dynamic (% of balance)
- Magic Number — unique ID to distinguish this EA's trades

- Trading Indikatoren — indicator-based signal filters (RSI, MA, BB)
Common Issues & Fixes
- Smiley face is a cross (✖) — AutoTrading is disabled. Click the toolbar button.
- EA not visible in Navigator — Restart MT4 after placing the file.
- No trades opening — Check spread filter settings and ensure the market is open.
